Hello and welcome to Denver Christian High School’s Worldview Seminar course, Engaging American Culture. If this is your first seminar class you’ll probably realize quickly that it’s not like other classes you’ve taken; there are no desks, there are fewer students and more (two) teachers, there are no tests or quizzes, and there is no textbook. But that doesn’t mean that we won’t be learning anything. We’ll just be learning it differently.
As with other DCHS seminar courses this course will be guided by a series of questions:
- What Is Culture?
- What Is Contemporary American Culture Like?
- How Should Christians Respond to Culture?
- Now What?
As we seek answers to these questions we’ll be discussing a wide variety of newspaper and magazine articles, songs, videos, advertisements and movies, many of which you can find on this site.
We’ll also be working on many different types of projects designed to help you better understand what you read, respectfully discuss your opinions in a group, and make formal and informal presentations to your classmates.
By the end of the class you will have a better understanding of the culture we live in (both the good and the bad), an understanding of our calling as Christians toward the culture around us, and (hopefully) some definite plans to personally make a positive impact on that culture.
